Things I’ve learned in the garden this year…

Plants are kind of like children. You must nurture them if you expect them to grow and flourish. I guess I always thought I could plunk plants in the ground. Slap on a little water here and there, and presto! I would have a big bountiful crop. Not so. Wow, that only took me how many seasons to figure out?? It’s exciting to see more and more families are growing their own food. What’s better than something fresh out of the garden on the table for dinner that night. I hope these are memories my children will keep.  All of you avid gardeners out there can just have a good laugh, we’re only beginners! What I learned this year;   FINALLY!

Key #1 Plant in good soil. Hopefully a bit of manure if possible. Coming up with perfect soil mixtures will vary depending on the plants specific needs. (This part gets more technical, I’ll work more on that next year.)

Key #2 Water often. Especially in our hot, dry climate! I don’t think I ever watered enough.

Key #3 Feed plants every couple of weeks. (Again you can get very technical with this, depending on plants needs)

Key #4 Don’t let plants bloom to early. Pick of flowers until plants grow bigger and are more sustainable.

Key #5 Spray for bugs. Spray on a simple solution of a couple drops of dish washing soap, diluted in lots of water.

The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail.

Isaiah 58: 11

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

Galatians 6:9

How precious are the little hands picking the fruit from the vines. If God can make the little hands and the fruit from the vine, He can certainly make us strong and brave. As I finally begin to heal, I realize how much I have learned from all of you in the House of Krause. What a blessing you are - every day of my life. Thank you!
