Home Made Flash Cards
Making home made flash cards is a fun easy way to help your child learn to say words that are relevant in their life! So much of learning process with Apraxia is visual cues. We use the Kaufman cards along with our home made cards. What we did is just go around taking pictures of everything that Luke uses and finds important in his daily life. Everything from his bed, bath tub, toothbrush, shoes, socks, juice, milk, pets, siblings, books, toys, anything that he would desire to say. Then I took the cards to Luke’s speech therapist and had her break down the words to their simplest form. She broke the words down from basic all the way up to two word phrases. They are very helpful.
Just an idea……..

What a wonderful idea!
I love the name Taloola. What a cutie.
Where did you purchase the Kaufman cards?

You can find the cards online. If you do a search there are several places on-line that do sell them.(Nancy Kaufman speech flash cards) Just a warning, they are expensive about 150-200$ per set. She also has a work book that goes along with it.(100$) We go through our speech path. She let’s us use what ever card stacks we are working on at the time. I’m also not sure how hard it would be as a parent to dive right into them?? I do believe they are designed to be implemented by an SLP. But with some research and study it maybe possible to figure out. They are wonderful. You can always contact Nancy herself through her website. She has a Ask Nancy a question form. And she is very nice to take the time to talk with you and try to help! She talked to my husband for half an hour on the phone when we were trying to figure all of this out for Luke.

Whoops, just now seeing this. Yeah, I did search and was a bit shocked at the price. LOL.
I did talk to our SLP and asked if she’d ever heard of Nancy Kaufman. Turns out that she’s actually been to one of conferences or something (not sure why she didn’t bring up last time when we were talking about possible apraxia. She can be a bit… scatterbrained sometimes *sigh*). But anyways, tomorrow she’s going to bring over all of her books, notes, etc. so I’m really looking forward to it. She said she had the cards, like 20 of them (which it seems like from your videos there are a lot more??). We’ll see how it goes. Unfortunately, this is our second to last session with her before Isaiah turns 3 at the beginning of July, so no more therapy until fall. I’m hoping to learn as much as possible from her, especially about the Kaufman method, so I can work with him over the summer.
Sorry for yet another novel on your blog.

Our sons are very close in age. Luke will be three in September. If you can get your hands the Nancy Kaufman training manual from the conference, you will have so so much information. It will keep you busy with ideas all summer. I have one because I went to her conference. To me the info is priceless. If you can really learn and understand her method you’ll be able to help your son sooooo much! As for the cards, it’s more like 100’s of cards. They are in two box sets. Each one contains lot’s of cards. Lukes SLP told me http://www.nss-nrs.com will have the cards on sale coming up soon.

Jen here is something else your volunteers can do - make flash cards for the children. Living in GRRR’s house are a couple of woman who can still think and be productive - their bodies have given out , not their minds. Could they help you prepare Luke’s cards? Let me know and I’ll get them started with help from Maria.

Hi Jen!
I have been thinking about you and your beautiful family a lot lately! I am working with a parent that might be interested in speaking with you about signing. Her son has a very rare syndrome and signing will be his basic form of communication for many years to come. You have such a calm and beautiful spirit and I think you might be able to share your story of grace and hope to help her begin her journey with her own son!
I will share your website info with her and hope that she makes contact with you soon!
So good to see recent family photos and see Luke’s progress on your therapy videos….miss you guys!
